Am I a huge nerd for making that title? The answer is yes. In any case, you really can save money on bread, which is a household staple that we seem to plow through quickly. Here are a few options:
- Buy it on sale and stock up in the freezer. Some people are really particular about what brand of bread they buy. If so, make sure you really do pay attention to sales so you don’t have to wait a long time. Bread will keep well for a few months.
- Buy it at a bread outlet. Discovering the bread outlets was one of the best things that ever happened to my grocery budget! I can get name brands like Sara Lee for under $1.00 per loaf. We like to buy whole wheat bread, which is a bit more expensive. We can still buy it for $.99/loaf – and that’s Sara Lee brand. It seems perfectly fresh to me. If you eat white bread it’s usually only $.75/loaf.
- Make it. Regular sandwich bread is actually pretty simple to make and tastes so much better than anything you’d buy in the supermarket. However, we seem to eat an entire loaf in about 24 hours so the jury is out on this being a budget solution. It’s just too good!
- Waste less bread: instead of throwing away the slightly stale bits of your old loaves, use them for bread crumbs, croutons, or toast. Those slices here and there add up!
Where do you buy your bread? Are you loyal to one brand or do you buy whatever is cheap? Leave a comment and let me know!

i love the bread at aldi..they have a 12 grain that is really good and always $1.69…which is pretty cheap, and they are the bigger sized slices, not those little ones!
Hi Barb,
Thanks for the great info on Aldi bread. I’ve tried their hoagie buns but never their loaves of bread. I know what you’re talking about for the bigger slices and for whole grain at that size that is a wonderful price. I”ll check it out thanks!
I love Aldi’s bread. I found their bread on sale for $.99 a loaf and bought 10! LOL I think the cashier thought I was nuts. I’ve tried making homemade bread for sandwiches… but we don’t use it fast enough and it gets dry. But I used some of the “dry” bread for french toast and it was delish!!
So glad to hear about Aldi having bread sales – I’ll pay attention!
