Here’s a recipe for making snow ice cream with not much more than some pantry ingredients and freshly fallen snow. Snow ice cream is a fun and easy activity to make with or without your kids. In any case, it’s a cheap treat! We have a boatload of snow from the blizzard that barreled through here last week. Here are the instructions to hack your next snow storm and make yourself dessert on a dime.

gather 1/2 c. half & half or milk, 1/4 c. sugar & 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Then if you have some little helpers, send them outside to gather snow. I had an adorable photo planned but my three boys started scuffling over who got to go out into the snow. It wasn’t very Norman Rockwellesque.

"Hey Henry hold the bowl up. Ummm okay."
In any case, scoop up 2 cereal bowls full of snow. Make sure it’s clean! It should be about 4 cups worth. Put it in a big bowl.

Pour all of your ingredients into the bowl.
Now get a spoon and start stirring!

The boys took turns stirring. They're really cooperative when they know dessert is coming. Hmm.
Stir a little more.

The ice cream will be coarse and grainy at first but then will smooth out more and feel like soft serve ice cream.
That’s it! Serve it up and enjoy!

All I can say is yum, I love snow ice cream and it feels very frugal too

My first experience with eating snow wasn’t do pleasant!
I am English but had moved to Montreal in Canada and Winter had arrived…. The first time I have ever seen snow like that.
My partner Lara (from Vermont) mentioned how much she liked Sugar On Snow…. I was like What?
So she ran into the garden, scooped out some freshly fallen snow and drenched it in some fine Maple Syrup and we started eating.
It was really nice for a few spoonfuls until I looked at my bowl and realised it was crawling with tiny worms…. no idea what they were but I stopped eating pretty fast!
In hindsight I should have munched it up, free protein isn’t to be snuffed at!
Hi Forest, thanks for the great comment!
What a hilarious story. I’ve always wanted to try “sugar on snow” since reading the Little House on the Prairie books. I hope my bowl won’t have any worms – ick! But no, probably not harmful. I had a science teacher who made us bake up some worms with chocolate chip cookies to prove that they’re a viable food source. Maybe viable, but not appetizing!
